Subject: Extract "foreign" characters, like Swedish å, ä, ö

When I extract text from a PDF file, all "foreign" characters are represented with numbers.

I can not identify these numbers from other numbers in the text as being representatives for characters.

Is it possible to get the orginal characters extracted instead, so that I can escape them before storing them in my database?
